Hi, What is the tone for 切 in 一切? In the previous lesson it was listed as 1st tone, but in this lesson you have it as 4th tone. Is this one fof those "words" that has different tone realizations in different constructions? I don't think this is a case of tone sandhi.

Mandarin Blueprint

Yep! This is another 多音字. 1st tone means 'cut' and 4th tone has other meanings. Do you have pleco? It clears these kinds of questions up really easily.

William Beeman

Thanks. I use Pleco, but they don't have a web-based app, so I more often use Yellowbridge on the computer. I wish Pleco would develop something that would work on a web browser.

Kate Gans

I remember this word by thinking that if you film a movie in “one cut”, you have filmed it all or filmed everything. It’s not perfect logically, but it helps me remember.

Christine

Thank you! This will help!

我不相信他说的一切。

The translation above says "I don't believe anything he said." But it seems like this sentence could also be translated as "I don't believe everything he said" or even as "I don't believe everything he says." Does it all just depend on the context?

I think that your first alternate translation is fine, but the second isn't necessarily implied by the sentence. The sentence is likely referring to an instance, a moment where "他" said something, and "everything 一切“ he said in that instance is not believed by 我.

If you wanted to say "I don't believe everything he says," it might be something like "他所有的话我都不相信."
