拿 in Context

Usage 1 - "to hold, to take, to seize, to capture": 

Sentence

请把你右边的那本书拿给我。

English:

Please hand over that book on your right-hand side.

我拿了本书进来。

Since I've been seeing this a lot, I'm hoping to get some insight here. When you say 'which must be accompanied by some other word or expression, often a verb complement' what are you referring to? Is is the object that is shifted, or the verb, that has to be accompanied?
