Maybe this has been covered before. In the sentence 这个座位是空的. Please explain the use of 的 at the end of the sentence. Is the sentence still ok if it is not used? I've been told that 的 will soften the sentence or that it adds certainty to the condition. Thanks, Andy

这个座位是空的(座位). The 的 at the end is attached to 空 to mean 空的座位, but since you already used 座位 earlier in the sentence you can omit it. You'll see this pattern come up all the time now that you're attuned to it.

This isn't exactly the same because the 的 is not at the end of the sentence but consider this. 我吃饭的时候喜欢用勺子. Does this sentence still work if 时候 is dropped and just implied? 我吃饭的喜欢用勺子. The Thanks, Andy

Hi Phil, I just listened to your response. I have heard your input numerous times now about the importance of not getting distracted too much by learning grammar at the expense of maximizing the amount of comprehensible input. I will definitely try to avoid doing this in an unnecessary way. There are times however when asking grammar questions does seem useful. For example my first question above. Having this little bit of information will make it easier to recognize this pattern when it comes up in the future.

Thanks,
Andy

Absolutely, and I agree that there is a balance for sure! Of course, always feel free to ask any questions, I just also don't want people to fall into the "thinking their way into fluency" trap too often.
