Haha, we can assume that the speaker is referencing a separate sentence since there are 10 characters (not five) in "这个句子由五个字组成." 字 refers to individual characters, whereas 词 cí refers to words (one-character or multi-character).

Okay, that's what I had always assumed 字 meant. So, if the sentence were meant to be self referential (very meta) it should say...
