Usage 1 - "long (as opposed to short) (cháng)": 

*Sentence

它有两米长。

English:

It’s two meters long.

Top-Down Words:

它 tā - it


Usage 2 - "grow, develop, enhance (zhǎng)":

Sentence

我长大了。

English:

I’ve grown up.

Top-Down Words:


*Sentence

最近我吃得太多,所以长胖了。

English:

I have eaten too much recently, so I've got fat.

Top-Down Words:

最近 zuìjìn - recently
所以 suóyǐ - so, as a result
多 duō - very many, a lot


Sentence

我的小狗长大了,还长长了。

English:

My puppy has grown bigger and longer.

NOTE:

The second 长 zhǎng is followed by 长 cháng (长长 zhǎngcháng). It's a Verb-How structure, which means that the structure is "Verb + Result of the Verb." In this case, "Grow 长 zhǎng with the result of becoming "long 长 cháng."

This is just the way it works in Chinese, there is no rhyme or reason that we know of. Although even if there was, explaining it wouldn't make you any better at Chinese. As long as you understand the sentence you'll acquire the language :D

That's a common pattern for other languages as well. Portuguese uses this same 有structure, and we say "to have xx height", rather than "is".
