I have a little question, so what's the difference between 长得 and 样子?
Mandarin Blueprint
长得 is a verb and is used to get across that something "looks" or "appears" a certain way. I've also noticed that it tends to be said about things that have grown or evolved into their current state, which is why it's often used to describe people. "他长得很帅 Tā zhǎngde hěn shuài - He looks handsome."
样子 is a noun, and refers to the appearance of something. "这座楼的样子很奇怪。Zhè zuò lóu de yàngzi hěn qíguài - This building's appearance is strange." 样子 isn't limited to things that grow, it can be anything's appearance, even abstract things like a "situation."

Since 得 comes after 长, then 长得 is a verb phrase. Is this a good hint?
Mandarin Blueprint
Yeah, I often think of it as "长得 + 怎么样 (zěnmeyàng - how about it)?"
A. 她长得怎么样?
B. 她长得漂亮!piàoliang - beautifulA. 他长得怎么样?
B. 他长得丑。chŏu - uglyMB Team

Hi Luke and Phil!
I have a question regarding
那怎样可以让一个人长得越来越好看呢?
The good news: I understood what it means after I had read it twice. The bad news: I do not understand why 一个人 comes after the verb 让.
Would it be wrong to say 那怎样可以一个人让长得越来越好看呢?
Thanks!
Mandarin Blueprint
No, the way you wrote doesn't make sense because you can't "让" another verb (in this case, 长得). You can only 让 nouns, usually people. 'How can you *make a person* grow more and more good-looking?"
Mirko R
Ah ok, I get it, 一个人 is the object. Thanks

Hi Luke, Thanks for that real life use and description about 长得. At this stage (Phase 4 beginning) i'm starting to try and get the memory working better with words (HMM for characters, but now the challenge is WORDs). What I found here is that your description of real life use of the word gives a nice living picture of its use. I find it easier to write the "lived experience" into the anki deck when I have you explaining it like you did here:) Thanks - My feedback is I find that videos like this in the "vocab in context" format where you give your real China experience are excellent for getting the memory loaded into the brain :).
Mandarin Blueprint
Cheers, Robert! I'll keep that in mind.
