我有麻烦的时候,会得到朋友的帮助。
I've seen these kinds of sentences pop up whereby the first part is translated into english as a general expression like 'when this happens'. Another sentence was one like... 'whenever there is a problem, people pretend they can't hear' or something like that.

But the way it reads in Chinese doesn't give me any hint to that - it just reads to me as 'I have (am having) an annoying time, I'll get help from my friends'. These read very differently in English since the one in the lesson is more general tense, while my interpretation is in the current present tense... thoughts?

It's the 的时候 part that makes it more general. "*when* I'm in trouble, I'll get help from my friends."
