Hi! In 那只小狗死在了马路旁--I don't understand the position/function of 在 in the sentence. I know it can designate ongoing action, and also location, but I don't see what it does in this sentence after the verb and before 了. Thanks!
Mandarin Blueprint
Here it just means "located". I think the placement of 了le threw you off a little.

Hello Guys,
In this sentence: "那只小狗死在了马路旁'' We have 4 words in a row using the third tone. If I remember correctly from the pronunciation course if we have 3 words using the third tone in a row, it's our discretion when to use second tone on the first word or second word. But what about in this case? When I listen to the audio it looks like to me they are using second tone for the first 3 words then third tone for 死 : Nà zhí xiáo góu sǐ. That's what I heard but maybe I'm mistaken. But if so, does it means we can use second tone for the all of them except the last word even if it's only 3 words using third tone? My apology if you already explained it before.Mandarin Blueprint
When 只 is a measure word, it's pronounced zhī in first tone, so it's not actually four in a row here.. However, if you had four third tones in a to, it would simply be 2nd 3rd 2nd 3rd.

Great! Thank you for your time! =)

As mentioned in one previous comment I am indeed personally confused by the place of 了 in 那只小狗死在了马路旁. This is typically a case where I wouldn't know what do to/where to place 了 or even if it's absolutely necessary considering that dying is an obvious state of change.
So the example sentence is : 那只小狗死在了马路旁
- Would 那只小狗死了在马路旁 be incorrect? Or have a different meaning?
- What about 那只小狗死在马路旁了 ?
- Would skipping 了 completely be incorrect and/or modifying the meaning?
Thanks!

It's all clear now and you're right, in the end my confusion came from the fact I didn't realize 死在 had to be considered as a whole (just like 吃完), until now I was considering 在 as a single independent preposition (basically equating "at", of more exactly the French version of it and how it would work in a French sentence.).
Thank you!

'狗'和'小狗'怎么不一样?
Mandarin Blueprint
这两个词不一定有区别。“小”有时候是一个“Prefix“。(这节课能说明:D:\Courses\Mandarin Blueprint\Course/phase-2-vocabulary-levels-7-12/categories/3445949/posts/16256759.html) 有时候“小狗”的意思是“Puppy," 不过因为“小”能作为“Prefix, 所以“小狗”也能拥有“很受爱的狗"的意思。
