How to Use This Lesson

Step One

Watch the video here on the course platform. Feel free to take as much time as you'd like to understand the content, but don't feel obligated to understand the text right now fully. You'll download the video and return to it later.

Step Two

Download the zip file from the sidebar (desktop/laptop) or below this description (Mobile APP). That zip file contains the following:

  • Text tracking video(s) MP4 file(s)
  • Audio MP3 file(s)
  • Image file of the text & top-down words for your reference

Dialogues contain one text-tracking video file at 80% speed followed by native speed.

Opinions & Short Stories contain two text tracking video files, one female voice, and one male voice. Both start at 80% speed, followed by native speed.

Step Three

At a time of your choosing, use the video files to practice shadowing. If you need a reminder, this lesson explains how to shadow. These video files are ideal for shadowing, especially if you download them to your phone because you can walk around while doing it.

My spirits were a bit low today, but after being able to read that with relative ease that injected some energy into my veins. I was even able to get an understanding of it with the native speed (still a bit too fast, but I've begun to see the light at the end of the tunnel now). These conversations and opinion pieces really keep a person motivated.

Can you also please explain in "因为Gal Gadot 好看是好看" what's happening with "好看是好看"?

A ∼ A it's A all right, but ...

好是好, 可是我不喜欢。
Hǎo shì hǎo, kěshì wǒ bù xǐhuan.
It's good all right, but I don't like it.

It's an interesting usage of 是 and can be applied to so many different adjectives.

What is ne (呢) doing in the sentence "我认识好多呢"? As I understood it before, it was implying a rhetorical question, inquisitiveness (for non- yes/no questions), "softening the tone", or indicating present tense, but this instance doesn't quite feel like it fits my prior concepts of ne :) Maybe it's the 4th instance?

Here's the entry from the PLC dictionary in Pleco:

HZ 呢⧸吶

你刚才到哪儿去了呢?
Nǐ gāngcái dào nǎr qù le ne?
Where were you just now? 􎿿

你到底认不认得她呢?
Nǐ dào dǐ rèn bù rèn de tā ne?
Do you know her or not? 􎿿

你对这件事是赞成呢, 还是反对呢?
Nǐ duì zhè jiàn shì shì zànchéng ne, hái shì fǎnduì ne?
Are you for or against this? 􎿿

他们都有任务了, 我呢?
Tāmen dōu yǒu rènwu le, wǒ ne?
They’ve got assignments, what about me? 􎿿

我错在哪儿呢?
Wǒ cuò zài nǎr ne?

我怎么能不记得呢?
Wǒ zěnme néng bù jìde ne?

这点子事, 何必大惊小怪呢?

Why get so excited over such a little thing? 􎿿

2 [at the end of a declarative sentence to reinforce the assertion]

远得很, 有好几千里地呢。
Yuǎn de hěn, yǒu hǎo jǐqiān lǐ dì ne.
It’s a long way off—thousands of li away. 􎿿

3 [at the end of a declarative sentence to indicate the continuation of an action or a state]

他还在生气呢。
Tā hái zài shēngqì ne.
He’s still angry. 􎿿

Bù xià yǔ ne, jiù qù ; xiàyǔ ne, jiù bù qù.
If it doesn’t rain, we’ll go; if it does, we won’t. 􎿿

如今呢, 可比以往任何时候都要强。
Rújīn ne, kě bǐ yǐwǎng rènhé shíhou dōu yào qiáng.
As for the present, things are far better than at any time in the past

I'd say the one in your example applies to usage number 2.

Re 我认识好多呢!
If I was translating the English to Mandarin I would probably try for 我认识好多得。 Would that still be acceptable? i.e. assuming the sentence is a shortened version of 我认识好多得东西。
(putting aside the 呢!for this question)

得 is used to describe how a verb verbs. E.g. 说得好, so it wouldn't work here.

The sentence as it is would be better than your two examples, which don't really work.
