你只有要求他们给你冰水,不过,他们很有可能会说没有。Unless I missed something, I believe we were told 要求 means requirement or require. But this sentence suggests 要求 can also mean to ask. If that's right, is it a common usage for this word?
Mandarin Blueprint
It is both a verb and a noun, and both usages are quite common.
Micaela Ellison
Another question about this sentence -- Are 有可能 and 可能 interchangeable? It seems the 很有 added before 可能 here is changing the meaning from "maybe, possibly" to "likely, probably."
Mandarin Blueprint
Pretty much interchangeable. "There is a possibility" vs. "possibly/maybe." Not much difference.
Rick Angleland
Any suggestions for our mnemonic movie to remind us of the less-common tone for 要 in 要求?
Mandarin Blueprint
People with a lot of 要求 have HIGH standards/are HIGH maintenance. This should help you remember it's the HIGH first tone.
