What is the purpose/meaning of 有 in the sentence 你爱吃有水果的蛋糕吗?
If we took out the 有, would the sentence still mean the same thing?

Mandarin Blueprint

Here's how to break down the sentence:
你·爱·吃·蛋糕·吗?
What kind of 蛋糕?
有水果的蛋糕
Therefore, 有水果的's function is merely a modification to 蛋糕

Hi one and all,
So occasionally there'll be top-down words formed of characters we already know like '从不' but that weren't introduced to us in vocabulary unlocked lessons.
Is there a specific reason for this, or can we feel free to add them ourselves?
谢谢

Mandarin Blueprint

You can add them if you want. The reason why we don't include some of these words as "New Vocabulary Unlocked" is that we were quite strict when building the foundation course that the words we ask you to focus on are the most frequent 1000. This way you don't distract yourself too much with vocabulary that will be easier to acquire after you already have a solid foundation.

Alex Sumray

I see, got it.
Thank you.

Hi
In 这个小男孩从不吃水果和菜,只吃肉, it seems that 来 (after 从) was omitted/is allowed to be omitted to give the meaning "never." Is this generally permissible? So is 从不 the same as 从来不?

Mandarin Blueprint

That's right!

我们每天吃午饭的时候会吃一点儿水果。

English:

I eat some fruit with lunch every day.

I am a little confused on this. Why isn't it translated "We eat some fruit with lunch every day." ??? I must be missing something with the meaning of 我们

REPLY

Mandarin Blueprint

That's a mistake, it should be “we". I'll get it fixed, thanks!
