Hi
in 以前是一名记者 would a person really use 名 as a measure word to refer to one's self? If it is respectful term, wouldn't it be used toward others as a respectful reference?

Mandarin Blueprint

This measure word is only used as a respectful term for certain professions, but for a general respectful term for a person you would use 位

William Beeman

Hi. In many languages you use "humble" terms to refer to one's self, and "elevated" terms to refer to others. So for example 您贵姓. you would never say 我贵姓. So since you identified 名 as a "respectful" counter, I wondered if there was the same kind of asymmetry.

Mandarin Blueprint

Oh, I see what you mean. Very good question! No, normally you would not refer to yourself using this respectful measure word. They would just just use 个 in most cases.
