Is there a difference in degree between 求 and 乞?

Mandarin Blueprint

They aren't used in the same way, but 乞 is pretty intense. The most common word that uses 乞 is 乞丐 qǐgài, which refers to a beggar on the street. 求 is just a general morpheme for "request" but in certain contexts can mean "beg." I'm sure you'll get the hang of it after enough context :).
