Usage 1 - "worker": 

*Sentence:

工人们都在工作。  

English:

All the workers are working. 

Top-Down Words:

都 dōu - all, every
工作 gōngzuò - to work; one’s work; a work task


Sentence:

工人们都出去工作了。

English:

All the workers went out to work. 

Top-Down Words:

都 dōu - all, every
出去 chūqù - to go out
 


Sentence:

那儿有很多工人在修路。  

English:

A lot of workers are fixing the road over there.

Top-Down Words:

修路 xiūlù - road repairing (修- xiū- to repair, 路- lù- road)

Maybe this is my bias here, but I've always thought of 'employee' as more white-collar and 'worker' as more blue-collar.
Is there a similar implication/distinction in Chinese?
