Usage 1 - "to hear": 

*Sentence:

你能听见我说话吗?  

English:

Can you hear what I’m saying? 


Sentence:

我听见他在骂人。  

English:

I hear he’s yelling at someone.

Top-Down Words:

骂人 màrén - yelling at people


Sentence:

一有事要做,他们就装听不见。

English:

As soon as there is work to be done, they pretend that they can't hear.

Top-Down Words:

就 jiù - (grammatical particle) in this case meaning “as soon as” or “right after”.
做 zuò - to do, make, to cook
事 shì - thing, matter, affair
装 zhuāng - pretend

Grammar Question:
In the first sentence, would it have been equally correct to use 可以 instead of 能?
