数 in Context

Usage 1 - "v. to count, to take account of (pronounced shǔ)": 

Sentence:

我害怕麻烦,出门总要数一下包里的东西,看有没有什么给忘了。

English:

I don't like to make trouble for myself, so before I go out I always check the stuff in my purse to see if I forgot anything.  

Top-Down Words:

害怕 hàipà - afraid
麻烦 máfan - trouble
里 lǐ - inside, within
忘 wàng - to forget


*Sentence: 

我数了数有几只狗。

English:

I counted how many dogs there were.

Why is there 给 in '什么给忘了'? I think I understand what it's doing, but I can't really rationalize it.

This is a rather strange one at first and it's used in very specific situations. No need to study the grammar, just do a search through your flashcards for more example sentences containing it and try to absorb the usage that way.

Hi Luke & Phil, in lesson 26, 数 in Context, the last part of the sentence,看有没有什么给忘了; could it be written as看有没有什么忘了 ?
