I guess the Chinese word 听写 can mean either dictate or transcribe, but in English it’s only the former. Is the translation wrong on this sentence, or is the speaker saying that they dictate what they’ve learnt to someone else?
Mandarin Blueprint
听写 is a common Chinese study activity where the teacher reads out a list of characters and the students have to write the characters correctly. You'll probably do this too if you learn Chinese at university!
Annette Bicknell
If a teacher simply reads a list of independent of each other characters, how does a student know which one with all the homophones?
Mandarin Blueprint
I know, right? Theoretically, you'd be hearing characters you recently learned and that would be how you know, but to me, it seems a mostly pointless exercise.
