In Japanese this character can mean "fresh" as in not rotten. Also in Chinese?Mandarin Blueprint
Perhaps in a metaphorical sense, after all, things that are just "born" are "fresh" to some degree. However, the common word for 'fresh' as it relates to food is "新鲜 xīnxiān"

Well, Japanese also has 新鮮 for "fresh", so that's the same as in Chinese. There are many similarities between Japanese and Chinese sometimes (though also many differences, of course) and I love comparing the two languages.
