A: 可是我没有中国朋友。我有点害怕和中国人说话。

B: 中国人都很友好。比如我的一个中国朋友,我们每一见面,他会给我说说中国的文化,很好玩儿。

How to Use This Lesson

Step One

Watch the video here on the course platform. Feel free to take as much time as you'd like to understand the content, but don't feel obligated to understand the text right now fully. You'll download the video and return to it later.

Step Two

Download the zip file from the sidebar (desktop/laptop) or below this description (Mobile APP). That zip file contains the following:

  • Text tracking video(s) MP4 file(s)
  • Audio MP3 file(s)
  • Image file of the text & top-down words for your reference

Dialogues contain one text-tracking video file at 80% speed followed by native speed.

Opinions & Short Stories contain two text tracking video files, one female voice, and one male voice. Both start at 80% speed, followed by native speed.

Step Three

At a time of your choosing, use the video files to practice shadowing. If you need a reminder, this lesson explains how to shadow. These video files are ideal for shadowing, especially if you download them to your phone because you can walk around while doing it.

When personal names come up like 小多, would you be able to also indicate which gender typically is associated with that name? Or if it is used by all similar to some English names that are fluent. I know of some names that are associated with male in a European language, but in English they are considered female. If the writing is in third person, then of course later 他 or 她 would make it clear, but this is first person.

Good question, Annette, here's a reply for you: https://www.loom.com/share/6109044c95ea475191ad3e8cfc4d5a84

Mentioned in the video:
多晓梅 -> 小多 - 姓 + 名字
多全国 -> 小多
小王

That is really interesting. Thank you so much. I thought 小 was actually part of the name (after all "Small" exists as an English last name). I am aware of the order of family name first and then given name in Asian names as opposed to how western languages do it. I just didn't realize the 小 here was meant as an endearment and thought of it as a last name and the 多 as a first name or the two characters as someone's first name if the person did not introduce themselves with their full name. Lots to learn about names, not just people names, but also place names.

你每一页都要认真地看 - Should 地 really be 得? Inote that the speaker inserted 就 to the phrase 他会给我说说. does it matter?

No and no :D

"我可以用什么办法学好中文吗?" -> Is it a common rule that you can put 好 after a verb to indicate doing that thing well?

REPLY

Mandarin Blueprint

Absolutely, it's a "Verb-How" construction. Here's that lesson again for a refresher: D:\Courses\Mandarin Blueprint\Course/phase-2-vocabulary-levels-7-12/categories/3445898/posts/16256729.html

I am having some trouble with this dialogue. One of the particular parts is "他会给我说说中国的文化." I can understand/assume this translates to "He will speak to me about Chinese culture."

I am confident I haven't made a movie for 给 (I am currently on level 23, character 310) so I don't know what 给 means in the sentence or if 会给 is the word I don't know. Could you explain the structure of this sentence because it is an EXTREMELY weird feeling I might know what a sentence means but not actually knowing what it means? Good, but extremely weird. 谢谢您!

Mandarin Blueprint

Correct! 给 means "to give" and 会给 is two separate words meaning "will give". Sometimes in Mandarin you can phrase it like this so it translates something like "he will GIVE me a talk about...". Sounds a little odd but just the ways it's done sometimes!
