Lesson 4 of 4

父母谁来决定宝宝的长相?

How to Use This Lesson

Step One

Watch the video here on the course platform. Feel free to take as much time as you'd like to understand the content, but don't feel obligated to understand the text right now fully. You'll download the video and return to it later.

Step Two

Download the zip file from the sidebar (desktop/laptop) or below this description (Mobile APP). That zip file contains the following:

  • Text tracking video(s) MP4 file(s)
  • Audio MP3 file(s)
  • Image file of the text & top-down words for your reference

Dialogues contain one text-tracking video file at 80% speed followed by native speed.

Opinions & Short Stories contain two text tracking video files, one female voice, and one male voice. Both start at 80% speed, followed by native speed.

Step Three

At a time of your choosing, use the video files to practice shadowing. If you need a reminder, this lesson explains how to shadow. These video files are ideal for shadowing, especially if you download them to your phone because you can walk around while doing it.

Text

Note: The text is pasted here in case you want to copy/paste one of the words into a dictionary app, but the above video and zip file download are best inputting the content as they have audio and text-tracking.

父母来决定宝宝的长相?妈妈决定宝宝的眼睛鼻子爸爸决定宝宝的嘴巴如果父母不白,那这些宝宝一定不会白;如果一个人不白,一个人白,那那些宝宝可能白可能不白。如果父母都高,宝宝长大后一定很,但如果父母,宝宝长大后也不一定不。有些人会担心父母长得胖的话,宝宝是不是比别的宝宝容易长胖? 不一定。因为宝宝完全可以多多运动来让自己不会长得太胖。

Thank you for posting the entire text as copy/paste. I like to put it into a Word document, then colour code a few words that really help me with fluency when I read (and in time I can just revert to regular font colour again). It is awesome to read a little more coherent text and put the spread-out sentence meanings in their proper context.

Hi there!
I have a question regarding
有些人会担心父母长得胖的话.
Why is it not
有些人会担心父母长得胖了的话?
My guess would be it's because the context makes it clear the parents have already grown up, correct? Could you still write the sentence with the 了?
Thank you!

V + 得 + Adj construction is a fixed construction that described how the verb verbed, so it inherently doesn't need a 了 because it isn't a change or completion, just a description. If you wanted to say "he got fat" you'd just say 他长胖了.

Understood, thank you!

"那那些宝宝…" This is pronounced here as "Nà nèixiē bǎobǎo…". Is it usual to differentiate the 那那 in this way or is it just a matter of choice or habit?

Just up to the speaker, really, but the first "那" will definitely be pronounced "nà." When it's 那 meaning "in that case," then it's always pronounced that way.

I had a question, but before that, I just want to say, this longer form content is super refreshing after only having sentences to read with words!

My question was about the sentence 宝宝长大后也不一定不高。I'm mainly confused about the 也 here. Does it just mean "also" so the sentence roughly translates to "When the baby grows up, it also will not necessarily be tall."?

Or do we have that 也不 construction where it means "not even a little bit" so then the text is saying the baby won't be tall at all when. it grows up?

Hi, thanks! This sentence makes sense in the larger context of the story. Previous to this sentence was another example so this 也 is just adding onto that.
