Step One
Watch the video here on the course platform. Feel free to take as much time as you'd like to understand the content, but don't feel obligated to understand the text right now fully. You'll download the video and return to it later.
Step Two
Download the zip file from the sidebar (desktop/laptop) or below this description (Mobile APP). That zip file contains the following:
Dialogues contain one text-tracking video file at 80% speed followed by native speed.
Opinions & Short Stories contain two text tracking video files, one female voice, and one male voice. Both start at 80% speed, followed by native speed.
Step Three
At a time of your choosing, use the video files to practice shadowing. If you need a reminder, this lesson explains how to shadow. These video files are ideal for shadowing, especially if you download them to your phone because you can walk around while doing it.

Note: The text is pasted here in case you want to copy/paste one of the words into a dictionary app, but the above video and zip file download are best inputting the content as they have audio and text-tracking.

It's rather addicting this shadowing thing isn't it!?

Wow, what a feeling to follow along with long form content and being able to understand. I listened to it all the way through and I was thinking "yeah this totally makes sense", and then I looked back realized there was no pinyin or translation, just Chinese characters. Very cool!

I read the comments before I started shadowing the first text, so I decided to keep track of my repetitions. At rep n°5 I guess I sounded like a dog trying to join in a Christmas carol. By rep n°25 I had evolved into a Neanderthal getting humiliated in a rap battle. Although this was by far the most frustrating part of learning Mandarin so far, the bottom line is I have just finished rep n°45 and got it done.
So do not discourage, friends! Once we've reached fluency, nobody will care how many repetitions we needed for a primitive text at 80% speed a couple of months ago. It's all just a part of the process.

Question, I know everyone's learning speed is different but I feel a bit behind. I was able to read all of this and understand it all, but I am VERY slow and even at 80% have no hope of shadowing this. I have been able to do it on DuChinese newbie stories at 50%, but I struggle to keep up, even going that slow. I still pause and read like I am in 1st grade, reading each word slowly and thinking as I read. I understand this will come quicker as I progress, and practice more. However, I just want to check in that this is normal, to still be very slow at this stage now being in phase 4. Thanks!
