很久以前，一个爸爸和一个儿子住在一起。爸爸每天种花种草，但是儿子却只知道玩儿。爸爸对他说：“儿子，你和我一起种花草吧。我越来越老了，以后这些花和草都是你来照顾。我们可是卖花赚钱来生活的啊！” 儿子笑着说：“爸爸， 种花种草有什么难的呢？你不用担心，我如果想种，一定能种好。” 说完，又出去玩儿了。一个冬天，他的爸爸病得起不了床，只能让儿子去种花种草，卖了以后拿钱给爸爸看医生吃药。儿子很有信心，他把种子放进土里，然后浇了点水，就回去睡觉了。在他看来，明天花就会长出来，然后他就可以拿去卖了。第二天，他发现，土里空空的，什么都没有，他觉得有点奇怪，就去问爸爸，为什么花第二天没有长出来呢？爸爸说：“ 花草和人一样，都需要时间来慢慢成长，你也不是一天就长这么大的啊！再多一点儿耐心吧！” 第三天，儿子又去土里看花长出来没，发现还是没有，他又回去了，然后第四天，第五天，第六天……第九天，那些花终于从土里长了一点点出来。儿子高兴地说：“看吧，我就说这很简单！” 可是又过了一个月，花还是没有长出来，它们只是一天比一天高。儿子又生气地去问爸爸为什么一直不开花。他爸爸说：“ 你还要再等一下，等那些花长来和桌子一样高，就会开花了。
