昨天我买了一辆电动车，在经过我朋友小花家的时候，我给她打了个电话，让她下楼来看我新买的电动车。但是小花说她今天刚买了一辆汽车，也正想让我看看。我听了以后很不高兴，因为我们从小到大都在比较谁过得更好。一年以前，她买了一辆红色的电动车，然后骑到我家楼下给我看。当时，我只有一辆自行车。看见她一副赢家的表情，让我很火大。可现在我买了电动车了，没想到，她又已经买了汽车。我又什么时候能买得起汽车呢？

我们别的朋友说我们不该这样比较，因为他们不知道为什么我们这样做。其实，是因为一个男孩。这个男孩是我们的同学，我和小花都喜欢上了这个男生。但是这个男生说，25岁的时候，看我俩谁过得更好，他就找谁当女朋友。从那以后，我们就开始比较。比学习，比收入，比谁的衣服好看什么的。

后来我们才知道，这个男孩早就有女朋友了，所以我们也不用比较了。

What's the significance of buying a conventional car in this story and why would the speaker be jealous of her friend buying a conventional car if she herself had just bought an electric car?

At least here electric cars are more symbols than conventional cars, they are more expensive, and the image associated to them is that they are the choice of more environmentally conscious people who appreciate new technology. The people driving them usually say that they wouldn't downgrade to a conventional car anymore.

电动车 usually refers to an eBike, that might help clear up her jealousy ;)
