Lesson 3 of 3

Vocab Unlocked from 士: 女士

Congratulations!
New Word(s) of Two-Characters or More Unlocked!

The word(s) below have a corresponding flashcard in the Hanzi & Words deck associated with this level. Before you end today's study session, add an image to the card (how to add images to flashcards). After that, unsuspend the card(s).

女士

Note: While 士 indeed means "soldier" (the full word is 士兵 shìbīng), it also means "commendable person." It's easy to understand the connection when you consider that most nations consider their soldiers highly commendable.

Usage 1 - "madam, ma’am"

Living Link Suggestion(s):

  • Any lady who presents herself as commendable will be called MADAM.
  • If you search 女士, you'll see a bunch of Chinese ladies in business suits, which gives you an idea of the type of people you'll call "女士."
