Lesson 2 of 2

Vocab Unlocked from 星: 星期

Congratulations!
New Word(s) of Two-Characters or More Unlocked!

The word(s) below have a corresponding flashcard in the Hanzi & Words deck associated with this level. Before you end today's study session, add an image to the card (how to add images to flashcards). After that, unsuspend the card(s).

星期

Usage 1 - "calendar week"

Living Link Suggestion(s):

  • It's a complicated reason why the star period of time means WEEK (read more here), so for now simply find an image of something you associate with a WEEKLY activity, e.g., going to church, changing the sheets, watching a particular TV show, etc.

Thought I would use an image related to the Chinese Golden Week, but then saw that everywhere it seems to be 黄金周 rather than using 星期. Is 星期 predominantly used when referring to the actual days of the week and that is why Golden Week uses 周? Looking around online it seems they are interchangeable.

That's right, they're pretty much interchangeable, but 星期 isn't used as a measure word and 周 can be.

For example, if you wanted to say "Tuesday," they're interchangeable (星期二 or 周二). However, if you wanted to say "three weeks," you need to add the measure word "个" to 星期 (三个星期) whereas with 周 it can directly serve as the measure word (三周).

If you are like me then you don't have anything specific that happens every week. As such a picked an image of star-trails. It is a picture of star(s) that has to be taken over a period of time.
