I would often mix the up 冖 prop with the 亠 and 宀 props when writing the character out. These particular props need a lot of consideration (perhaps along with the 穴 prop) as I found the majority of my mistakes when writing, came from these particular components.
亠 saucepan lid (often used as a weapon in stories)
宀 children's playhouse (noticeable with a chimney on top), also used in 家
冖: waterproof tarpaulin (which can be used to cover, and then uncover things, as often there is another prop underneath it.)
穴 : black hole (has the meaning of cave, but often appears on top, and a cave entrance also looks like a back hole).

Tarp cover - look for image with a tarp covering e.g. lumber or crates as this shows the best shape for this radical.
