Congratulations!
New Word(s) of Two-Characters or More Unlocked!

The word(s) below have a corresponding flashcard in the Hanzi & Words deck associated with this level. Before you end today's study session, add an image to the card (how to add images to flashcards). After that, unsuspend the card(s).

长大 zhǎngdà

Usage 1 - "to grow up"

Living Link Suggestion(s):

  • Peter Pan (doesn't want to GROW UP)
  • Grow until you are big. That's GROWING UP!

长相 zhǎngxiàng

Usage 1 - "features, appearance"

(Note: When 相 is pronounced "xiàng" it means "looks, appearance" or "photograph," but in this case, it means "looks, appearance.)

Living Link Suggestion(s):

  • You must grow into your looks or APPEARANCE.
  • "Many Different Faces" (this will get you a sense of all the different APPEARANCES people can have)

长得 zhǎngde

Usage 1 - "to look like, to appear, looks"

Living Link Suggestion(s):

  • This word tends to be followed by an adjective, for example “长得 + Handsome (帅 shuài) / Beautiful (美 měi/漂亮 piàoliang) / Ugly (丑 chǒu), etc. Therefore, do an image search for 长得帅 - 长得漂亮 - 长得丑 to get a sense of what Chinese people consider handsome, beautiful, and ugly respectively.

Sarie

when do we use 美 vs. 漂亮? is one for a person's appearance and one for an object's?

REPLY

Mandarin Blueprint

Both can be used for either people or objects. 美 seems to be for more intense beauty, such as that you might experience observing a beautiful sunset or cloud formation or seeing someone strikingly attractive.
