- Truth About Truth Tiles 2
Truth Tiles 2 was the opening activity in the workshop described in the next item. It was introduced briefly as a whole class investigation and then presented as a hands-on task for a pair of students, as in the eTask Pack. The next day we received this email:
Hi Doug,
It was lovely to meet you yesterday. I have used your tasks at a previous school and they always engaged students.
I'm hoping to get them for my current school.
I gave the Truth Tiles 2 problem to my husband and my son this morning and it kept them busy for ages. I can't wait to use it in my classes!
Thanks again,
Linda Barnard
There are simple truths in this message - and that's the truth.
See Link List below for the Truth Tiles 2 cameo. This task has a companion Maths300 lesson with software.

Mmm, these teachers seem to be on task with their hands on hands-on tasks.
- Every task has a story to tell.
- A library of tasks is an anthology of practical stories to improve mathematics teaching and learning.
We can run this workshop for your staff to introduce them to the eTask Pack, or use the pack yourself as an on-going source of professional development. It contains leader's notes and slides for your first workshop.

- Leftovers List
| In October the last 14 kits of 50 ready made hands-on tasks were available. In November there were only 8 left. Now there are none.
- The only leftovers are those shown on this list stuck up beside my desk.
- First in best dressed.
- $5.50 per task plus freight.
- Ring 03 9720 3295 or 0401 177 775 to ask about what's left on the Leftovers List or ordering.
- School orders need an order number and are paid on invoice.
- Overseas orders and private orders are paid in advance using credit card or EFT.
Following 25 years of supporting mathematics education around the world, ready made hands-on tasks will never again be part of mathematics education. Thank goodness for the evolution of eTasks.

- Engineering 'aha' Moments in Number
Would you like your Primary school to benefit from and contribute to a network of teachers engineering 'aha' moments in their classroom? Number sense can be enhanced beyond what is normally expected for the age.
Now is the right time to join and make the most of this classroom wisdom in 2018. Activities for all teachers K - 6. Working Mathematically with Infants is also available to members. It offers 60 weeks of planned, integrated number work - 10 weeks per semester - for 5 to 7 year olds.
See Calculating Changes in the Link List below.
- Get to Know a Cameo
Task 117, 12 Counters
| 'Give Probability a Chance' was the title of one our sessions at the MAV conference. A participant said she was looking for probability activities her staff could use to start the year so that probability wasn't left until the end of the term and then left out. Great idea.
Chance activities tend to be appealing to kids because they have a game feel, it takes whole class participation to gather enough data so there is part for everyone to play and usually the emphasis is more on explaining data than obtaining a pre-determined right answer. A great way to build relationships with a new class.

You might like to give probability a chance after summer with Task 117, 12 Counters.
- It is a game and it can be introduced through physical activity.
- Each player/team places 12 counters (which might be people) in boxes numbered 1 to 12.
- Two dice are rolled and summed and one counter is removed from that box if available.
- What is the 'best' way to place the counters so they are removed in the least number of rolls.
At every level there is opportunity for reasoning and analysis based on evidence. That's the work of a mathematician. See Link List below for the 12 Counters cameo.
Consider too how easy it would be to make your own copy of this task for your Task Library. Print the task card from your eTask Pack, laminate and add counters and dice, which are in every store room.
Keep smiling,
Doug.
