- Maths With Attitude: 2nd Edition
Maths With Attitude 2nd Edition is here. It's time to take a fresh look at this set of 16 kits which offer a core Working Mathematically curriculum from Years 3 - 10.
The first MWA kits were published in March 2002 and the series was completed in March 2005. Through the decade since release, hundreds of kits have been placed in Australian schools and many others overseas. But also through that decade things have changed, the main ones being:
- richness of our web sites
- ease of access to the Internet
- methods by which teachers access information
So we have reviewed, refreshed, revitalised and reconstructed Maths With Attitude to give it more web strength, but retained the same successful content and planning approach. Find the details through the Link List below.
- New Order Form
Maths With Attitude 2 has caused us to recreate our order form. Why? Because ... the price has decreased!
MWA no longer includes a CD-ROM of Maths300 material because that can now be accessed super-efficiently directly from the Web, where it is always current. So we were able to recalculate the costs and you win. MWA 2nd Edition kits are now only $399 each - a drop of $50. See Link List below for the new order form.
Note: Maths300 membership is assumed throughout Maths With Attitude manuals. However, the kits can now be obtained without first being a Maths300 member school.
- Counter Escape
Barbro Söderberg, who teaches mathematics to teacher trainees at Högskolan Malmö, Sweden has contributed a magnificent piece of mathematical analysis to the Counter Escape cameo. If you teach probability anywhere from Year 11 on through university this task is now well and truly in your court. Thanks Barbro. See Link List below.
- Maths300 News
Damian Howison, a generous contributor to Task Cameos and Maths300, has, with the help of his staff, designed and tested a new Investigation Guide to support Maths300 Lesson 11, This Goes With This. They have also come up with a great variation on the equipment for the task that recycles factory off-cuts. Members, primary or secondary, will get a buzz from these ideas. See Link List below.
- Tasks of the Month
Two new cameos this month.
- Monkeys & Bananas is a silly story about three monkeys who work all day to build a pile of bananas and then flop into bed too tired to eat them. However, in the night each one in turn gets up, eats a banana and hides a third of what's left. In the morning they can equally share the remaining bananas. How many bananas were there in the original pile? The puzzle is actually quite intriguing for students at all levels, including senior high school.
- Tables For 25 derives from a real class faced with the challenge of sitting in groups of a certain size with the extra restriction that there must be at least two boys at each table. Obviously they knew how many students were in the class and how many of those were boys. What they didn't know was the number of different solutions to the problem and the wealth of related problems this would open up.

Half the education world is about to start winter holidays and the other half is taking summer holidays. We're joining the non-working throngs and taking leave in July. Your next Mathematics Centre eNews will be in August.
Keep smiling,
Doug.
