Introduction
These guidelines apply to Ethernet remote I/O drops on remote racks.
Racks and Extensions
An Ethernet remote I/O drop can include 2 racks. In a 2-rack drop, the racks are linked with these bus extender modules and cables:
Remote Drop Type |
Bus Extender Module |
Cable |
---|---|---|
Quantum |
140 XBE 100 00 |
140 XCA 717 0• (1 to 3 m) |
Modicon X80 |
BMX XBE 1000 |
BMX XBC •••K (0.8 to 12 m) |
Maximum Configuration
Quantum remote I/O drops can include two 16-slot racks for a maxiumum of 32 slots. Modicon X80 remote I/O drops with a BMXCRA312•0 adapter module can support two racks for a maximum of 24 slots.
The table shows the maximum number of modules of each type in remote drops:

NOTE 1:
140CRA31200: This adapter module consumes 1 slot in the main (first) rack in Quantum remote drops. The extended (second) rack in a Quantum remote I/O drop does not require an adapter.
BMXCRA312•0: This adapter module supports a Modicon X80 remote I/O drop with 2 racks when a bus extender module is in both the main and extended racks.
NOTE 2: A power supply consumes 1 dedicated slot in each rack in Quantum and Modicon X80 remote I/O drops.
NOTE 3: A bus extender module is required for each rack in remote I/O drops. In Quantum remote I/O drops, the bus extender consumes 1 rack slot. In Modicon X80 remote I/O drops, the bus extender attaches to the end of the rack and does not consume a rack slot.
Refer to the list of modules that remote I/O installations support.
