I looked online, but have trouble connecting "account" to the translation I see in the dictionary: household, door, family. Is the tie-in that everyone in a household/family/anyone who goes past the door (i.e. entrance) needs to be accounted for/tallied as in an account?

The earliest meaning is "door", which is connected to "family" and "account". Family because of the door to a home, and account because each account is individual to each person. 谢谢. Interesting website. Not much more with regards to etymology than what the etymology tab in Yellow Bridge says. I completely understand the door = family connection and will take account at face value as part of that and in my imagination tie it in with the more than 2000 years of keeping taps on every citizen and having that account.
