• Originally, cars didn't have a roof, so you had to get on the car. Only later did we start saying GET IN THE CAR, but the Chinese stayed the same. By the way, you would also say this for a bus or train, and in that case we would still say GET ON THE BUS or GET ON THE TRAIN, which is the same as Chinese.
