Lesson 2 of 2

Vocab Unlocked from 洗: 洗手间

Congratulations!
New Word(s) of Two-Characters or More Unlocked!

The word(s) below have a corresponding flashcard in the Hanzi & Words deck associated with this level. Before you end today's study session, add an image to the card (how to add images to flashcards). After that, unsuspend the card(s).

洗手间

Usage 1 - "washroom, bathroom, toilet"

Living Link Suggestion(s):

  • The wash hands room is the BATHROOM/TOILET.
  • Images of different types of bathroom. Beautiful bathrooms or terrible disgusting bathrooms (we daresay the latter is more memorable).

Is there a difference between 洗手间 and 厕所?

Mandarin Blueprint

Not in any meaningful way. If you pressed me I'd say that 厕所 is a bit more to the point whereas 洗手间 is trying to be slightly more tactful. You'll also see 卫生间 wèishēng jiān, which is like saying "hygiene room." In practice, all three are pretty much interchangeable.

The first thing to come to mind was a toilet sign, and one strong living link related to them was this great sketch from Limmy's show: https://youtu.be/8nFn9qQ9swk

Albeit crude, I remember this one but using the three 'S's. I believe it to be an Australian saying but I could be wrong. The three 'S's are
Shower
Sh*t
and a Shave
which is enough to help remind me of the word and its pronunciation.
