The word(s) below have a corresponding flashcard in the Hanzi & Words deck associated with this level. Before you end today's study session, add an image to the card (how to add images to flashcards). After that, unsuspend the card(s).
孩子
Usage 1 - "child"
Living Link Suggestion(s):
- When KIDS are playing hide & seek, they shouldn't hide so (háizi) well that you are never found.
- Image of kids playing a game.
女孩
Usage 1 - "girl, chick (young woman)"
Usage 2 - "female child (not a young woman if adding 子)"
Living Link Suggestion(s):
- A girl child is a YOUNG LADY (both actual children and 'young ladies' in their teens and early 20s). If you add another child (子), you can be sure it's a YOUNG FEMALE CHILD.
- If you image search 女孩, you'll get a good sense of how this can mean both a female child and a young woman.
男孩
Usage 1 - "boy, young man"
Usage 2 - "male child (not a young man if adding 子)"
Living Link Suggestion(s):
- A boy child is a YOUNG MAN (both actual children and 'young men' in their teens and early 20s). If you add another child (子), you can be sure it's a YOUNG MALE CHILD.
- If you image search 男孩, you'll get a good sense of how this can mean both a male child and a young man.
小孩
Note: Sometimes pronounced 小孩儿.
Usage 1 - "child, kid"

any real difference between 小孩 and 孩子?
Mandarin Blueprint
Not much, but I can imagine an old person referring to someone who is no longer a child but still relatively young as "孩子." Almost like an old-timer saying to someone in their 20s "you're gonna go far, kid." 小孩, on the other hand, really only refers to children.
