Vocab Unlocked from 分: 分钟 - 分手 - 分开 - 过分

Congratulations!
New Word(s) of Two-Characters or More Unlocked!

The word(s) below have a corresponding flashcard in the Hanzi & Words deck associated with this level. Before you end today's study session, add an image to the card (how to add images to flashcards). After that, unsuspend the card(s).

分钟

Usage 1 - "minute of time"

Living Link Suggestion(s):

  • Easy, divide the clock into 60 MINUTES.
  • Search "Minute Maid"

分手

Usage 1 - "to break up (separate hands)"

Living Link Suggestion(s):

  • When a boyfriend and girlfriend BREAKUP, they separate their hands. How poetic!
  • TV dramas with BREAKUPS = fun shows (fēnshǒu)

分开

Usage 1 - "to separate, come apart, to part ways"

Living Link Suggestion(s):

  • When something COMES APART it's because it has separated and space has OPENED between them.

过分

Usage 1 - "over-the-top, excessive, undue"

Living Link Suggestion(s):

  • It's EXCESSIVE when you go over the amount of components you need.
  • Go (over the) Fence (guòfèn); going OVER-THE-TOP.

I think the Moses idea is great! Mine is a little more prosaic and very British. Just Google “Terry’s Chocolate Orange gif” and childhood Christmases come flooding back as you watch the “orange” pieces separate out - smell & taste come into play too which is a bonus.

过分 - type in the Chinese in Google Images and find the black/white image of a helicopter parent and the kids in a cage. Image is complete with a helicopter above.

Moses certainly 分开 the Red Sea =)

I heard (well, noticed) 分开 for the first time recently in a discussion with my neighbor who was curious to know if our baby was sleeping with us or in her own bed. Had we already 分开? was the question.
