When in its original form of 刀, still think of it as some specific knife.
When it is on the right, it will be written 刂, in which case you can think of it as a sword.

That's great. The "vegetable peeler" is a "Sparschäler" (economy peeler) in German. The blade and the handle look exactly like this character. Thanks a lot for the idea.

For sword theme for the刂 prop, I'm going with Sting from The Hobbit. But other notable suggestions could be a Minecraft sword, Excalibur, or the Sword of Gryffindor.
