Usage 1 - "Chinese character"

- The letters of the Han people. We daresay you won't struggle to remember this one, however, make sure when typing that the 字 in 汉字 has the 宀 component. There is another word "汉子 hànzi - 'man; fellow'" (note, 子 not 字) that people frequently type incorrectly since the Pinyin is the same.

Early on in my learning, I was trying to read a basic graded reader. I wanted to tell my tutor that my book had a lot of Chinese characters. I said something along the lines of 这本书有很多汉子。She gave me a funny look and told me it sounded like my book had a lot of macho men in it. That was definitely not my intention, and it would have been a little embarrassing if it hadn't been my tutor. In this case, it was funny and I had a good laugh. Ever since then, I've been careful to differentiate 汉子 and 汉字!

Sometimes I like to add interesting words to Anki just to reinforce my comprehension of characters/syllables, so I looked up 汉子. It doesn't seem common, but I found 女汉子 = independent or tough woman! (and some amusing photos on google images).
