Sometimes life brings little treasures which remind you why you keep teaching. Davina's story actually resulted in three little treasures - short term, medium term, long term.
Short TermI was so excited by Davina's original insight that I couldn't wait to get to the staffroom for the morning cuppa.I've gotta tell you what this kid said to me this morning!I had some MAB in hand and whether my colleagues wanted to hear it or not, the story was retold. There were two or three Grade 4 teachers at the table. Instantly one of them said: That kid's smart. I want her in my class next year. Medium TermOne day the next year I was wandering around the playground on Yard Duty. There is always a small gaggle of children who accompany you on these travels. On this day Davina was one of them, and as the kids sometimes do she took my hand as we drifted among the downball players, basketballers and chatterboxes. For no particular reason she said:I'll liked being in your class last year. Long TermI have lived in the same area for more than 25 years and taught at a school very close to home for 14 of those. Davina's year was just one of that number. One day I was in the garden when a young lady I vaguely recognised walked past exercising her dog. Davina was now 19 years old and training to be a nurse. I had told her story many times at professional development sessions, so once we each worked out who the other was the conversation went as follows. Cross my heart and hope to die, this is almost verbatim. Davina, you'll probably think I am stupid, but I have to ask you this. How would you work out 137 - 48? From The EmailI emailed Davina a copy of this conversation for verification, and sent her examples of the original story. Her response by email was:Thank you so much for posting me the information on the blocks and math calculations. I am sorry that I have not caught up with you when I have been passing, but uni has been keeping me very busy, as usual. Your work is very interesting, I am thrilled that I have made a contribution to it. I was also very excited to know that the way I used those blocks to solve maths problems may hopefully help many children learn with greater ease and to a greater capacity. Once again thank you for the information.
