Textbook or Not?

The following quote is from Calculators, Children and Mathematics, the report of the Calculator Aware Number project.

... teachers who were accustomed to a published scheme would find the project too difficult if all published materials were discouraged. Some schools cut up textbooks and made workcards from the pages they would continue to use, others withdrew some workcards from their scheme. In general, over the years, the project teachers have moved away from published schemes as they have become more self-confident in their thinking.
