Choosing to Use FDR

How to Decide
After you have connected to a device out of the box, you need to configure the device for use in your system. You may configure a device to use FDR, a BOOTP server, or a stored IP address.
Using the FDR service provides significant benefits. Using FDR requires using a role name for the device, and an FDR server is present in your system. A role name is a user-friendly identifier given to the device. Two examples follow.
For a complete discussion of FDR and role names, see Understanding Fast Device Replacement.
The choice between serving an IP address from an FDR server or not depends upon both your automation environment and your needs for replacement capabilities.
